Google is upgrading Google Maps with a new experience that makes public transit and walking navigation more flexible, closing the gap with driving mode.
For years, riders had to cancel their trip to explore the map or change destinations. The new update fixes that with a redesigned flow.
What’s New?
- Explore While Navigating: A persistent bottom bar shows trip details while the map stays interactive.
- Instant Alternatives: If the subway is delayed, quickly compare walking or biking to see what’s faster.
- Easy Destination Changes: Enter a new address and Maps recalculates without restarting the trip.
- Seamless Mode Switching: Step-by-step walking directions appear after exiting a station without losing the overall journey.
- Walking Incident Reports: Report construction, blockages, or hazards to improve safety and accuracy.
Rollout
The update is rolling out server-side and should appear over the coming days as long as you’re on the latest app version.
